A case involving three missing children from Kayseri has been reopened after a convict claimed the trio was kidnapped by an "organ mafia" that allegedly abducts children and sells their organs on the black market.
"Three children were kidnapped by three people, and after their organs were taken, the bodies were thrown into the Euphrates River," the prisoner said in his letter.
The Sivas Prosecution Office reopened the case after it came into possession of the letter.
The children in the Central Anatolian province of Kayseri went missing during the Ramadan bayram holiday last year. Two siblings and a neighbor, between the ages of 7 and 10, left home to collect candy, a bayram holiday tradition. The children failed to return home that night and have not been located since.
However, the father of the missing siblings, Hamza Tekin, said the prisoner's claims were unconvincing.
"[The convict] claims the bodies were thrown into the Euphrates River," said Tekin. "If that were true, the bodies would have washed ashore by now."
The letter emerged after Fırat Yıldız visited his brother in Sivas's E-type prison, during which time one of the prisoners asked Yıldız if he could send a letter to Kayseri, according to reports.
Yıldız reportedly read the letter detailing the information about the missing children before handing it over to the Sivas Prosecution Office.
In the letter the prisoner, who is serving a life sentence, said he wanted to free himself of his guilt by writing the letter.
Cuma Ali Aydın, general manager of Kayseri police department, said the investigation order had not yet reached their office.
