CAIRO: At least 11 people have been arrested in what appears to be an organ trafficking ring between Syria and Egypt, local Syrian media reported on Monday. According to the report in al-Watan newspaper, the group had been responsible for delivering organs from over 150 people in the past year alone.
The newspaper said that 26-year-old Fadia is the group's leader and had coordinated organ trafficking throughout slums in the Syrian city of Aleppo and delivered the organs to buyers in Cairo.
Fadia allegedly organized travel for donors to Cairo, "where they would sell one of their kidneys to patients from Gulf Arab states for meager amounts of money," the newspaper reported.
At least two members of the group are based in Cairo and Syrian authorities have sent a request for a warrant to arrest the two people to Interpol.
Recent reports have indicated that wealthy Egyptians often seek out and find a poor citizen in order to pay sums of money for an organ. Rights groups confirmed that this occurs mainly with rich Christians purchasing an organ from a poor Muslim.
The growing black market organ trade has left doctors and government officials looking for a solution. This new law, they believe, will help stem the tide of rich people buying body parts from people who need the money in order to support their families.
