China may surpass Japan as Asia's biggest natural-gas user by the middle of this decade, according to Royal Dutch Shell.
"China could overtake Japan to become the largest gas market in Asia by 2015," Stuart Bradford, head of marketing, strategy and analysis at Shell Energy Europe, said at a conference in Berlin on Wednesday.
China will import more tanker-borne liquefied gas as well as pipeline supplies from Russia and Central Asia, he said. Tens of thousands of kilometers of gas pipelines are under construction in the country, Bradford said.
The nation has three operating LNG terminals and 16 are currently at different stages of planning or construction.
Japan is dependent on fuel imports and is the world's biggest buyer of LNG, ahead of South Korea.
