Interview with Modar Barakat, author and political analyst

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says Syria will not waver in its "unceasing battle against terrorists."

The Syrian president also said that the act of killing and terrorizing are perpetrated by armed gangs against the civilians and law enforcement members.

Assad made the remarks during a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

To further discuss the issue, Press TV talks with Modar Barakat, author and political analyst in Damascus.

Press TV: Would you say Saudi Arabia has had a hypocritical stance with regards to events taking place in the region, sending in forces to assist the crackdown on the people of Bahrain, supporting the Yemeni government but recalling its ambassador to Syria?

Barakat: I think this is an immoral stance by the Saudis. It is not just double standards. What they did to Bahrain is worse than what they did in their stance against Syria. Now we are seeing [them] ignoring all the rehabilitations and all what the Syrian government has done and attacking the Syrian government's position, ignoring that the armed people in the streets are coming from everywhere in the world.

I heard from our Russian specialist saying that the Saudi king has been dead for ten days and I wonder what the Saudi government is doing, talking about the Syrian situation, interfering in the internal affairs of Syria while they have their troops in Bahrain killing protesters, really peaceful protesters... I wonder what the Saudis are planning for themselves for the future by following the United States elites.

Press TV: According to a well-informed source, committees have been operating within the Saudi governmental institutions with the aims of stoking tensions in Syria. Is Saudi Arabia receiving the US support in its actions?

Barakat: That is absolutely right. They are being pushed by the US; they are being pushed by the Zionists basically. The Saudis are very well known in Syria that they are paying money for some tribes here and there in Syria to do what they want them to do; to bring down the Syrian government as they are dreaming of.

Press TV:With a long report card of human rights violations and all forms of gatherings being banned in the Saudi kingdom, interesting as it may be, Saudi based Syrians have been given a free hand to criticize the government and organize in anti-Syrian regime activities. What can you say about that?

Barakat: A woman cannot drive a car in Saudi Arabia. Voters cannot vote for themselves in Saudi Arabia. Governors in Saudi Arabia can cut necks and behead people the way they want whenever they do not like them.

They cannot talk about moralities; they cannot talk about human rights; they cannot talk about Syria at all. I heard yesterday someone from Saudi Arabia saying that we had enough wars. We have had enough wars with the Israelis.

I wonder what wars they have joined them, apart from showing off in Kuwait 1991-1992. The last war, I think the Saudis had ever been in was a little fight at Badr [a key battle in the early days of Islam and a turning point in Prophet Mohammad (PBUH)'s struggle with his opponents among the Guraish] about 1400 years ago.
